What is Functional Yoga?

Functional Yoga is not another yoga style; it is an approach that can be applied to ANY style of yoga, and indeed any exercise, you practice. It is based on the scientifically proven premise that our skeletons, tissues, physiology, temperament and motivation are made and organized in a way that is ours only and unique, this is WHO WE ARE.
“The idea of a visually “Perfect Pose” that everyone must strive to achieve is a fallacy that can result in ineffectiveness and even injury. The ultimate limit to every range of motion in yoga is our bones, and no two people’s bones are exactly alike. Everyone has a different range of motion in every pose. Therefore, in order to be truly effective, a yoga pose must be adapted to the unique bones and body of each individual” (Paul Grilley, founder of Yin Yoga).

Function or Aesthetics?

Rather than focusing on aesthetic goals, in Functional Yoga we focus on the function, the purpose of the practice. You will become more intimately aware of how your individual body works – which movements and poses are most appropriate for you. You will benefit from this nourishing and fulfilling practice in your own unique way, whatever your age, background, body shape or flexibility.

What exactly will we practice?

In this class, we will mix some yin and yang practice, benefiting from the insightful work of several inspiring teachers Laurence has trained with over the years:
o Jill Miller’s Yoga Tune Up ® (an integrated system that derives from traditional yoga and physical rehabilitation techniques) and Roll Model ® Method (self-massage / myofascial release moves using Therapy balls)
o Paul Grilley’s work in developing Yin Yoga and also some more yang-ish poses
o Traditional Therapy Yoga postures

What are the specific benefits of Functional Yoga?

In addition to the expected benefits of a yoga practice, you will
o Understand what are the goals of a posture and how to choose your own variation
o Feel and listen better for your joints and physiological limits, what prevents you from going further, respect your body even more
o Improve your posture in daily life and how you move yourself as you will develop proprioception skills (ability to feel in space)
